In the mid-nineteenth century youg women here and abroad were entranced with the idea of button charm strings. It was widely believed that if a girl diligently assembled a string of 999 beautiful buttons-all different-the thousandth button would be bestowed by the beau destined to become her husband. Lovelorn lasses often spent hours sorting through family button bags. They would leave them out at their homes so any visitor could contribute to this dowry.
